True Sustainability
Making progressive movement towards being as sustainable as possible is at the core of what drives O Moon forward, in design, production and outlook. In an industry that is consistently mired in unsustainable practices, the future must revolve around new thinking and fresh approaches, whilst still providing beautiful clothing. The idea of ‘thoughtful consumption’ must now be pushed out from the shadows and into the mainstream, and begin to turn the tide of today’s throwaway culture.
By strongly focusing on repurposing old garments to make new ones, I am striving to use the resources already on this planet. To my mind this is a simple but powerful idea. When not recycling garments, I love to use vintage fabrics, dead stock (left over fabric from factory production), post production off-cuts (from O Moon and other designer makers), recycled fabrics, and organic cottons. Pulling inspiration from a mix of repurposed, vintage, production waste, dead stock and organic fabrics puts true sustainability into practice.
I like to say ‘made resourcefully’; which not only applies to the fabric sourcing itself, but the way in which the pieces are carefully laid and cut, to maximise the usage. My aim is to be zero waste by using the offcuts I have (as well as those sourced from other brands) to put back into patchwork, or appliqué, that will be used within other garments. Carefully making to order means making what is needed, not creating stock, and being constantly mindful of the negative impact wastage has had, and continues to have through the rise of fast fashion.
O Moon doesn’t follow the trend of introducing new collections each season, but rather organically develops styles to suit the changing weather and resources available. Drawing on years of high-end training, design and production skills, and harnessing that to contemporary style, I aim to make pieces that never fall ‘out of fashion’. This really is slow fashion at its best, it takes time, and therefore costs more to produce, but you can feel safe in the knowledge that what you are buying for your child is best for their future.
O Moon products only use natural fibres for their comfort, breathability and quality. O Moon keeps a safe distance from synthethic plastic fabrics that have put much mass-market clothing at the centre of oceanic pollution.
Being firm believers in reducing all aspects of waste - especially non bio-degradable waste - each order is wrapped in tissue paper and off-cut fabric, and posted in cardboard using paper tape, so you know your order has as little environmental impact as possible.
In a bid to keep O Moon clothes in use for as long as possible, I offer a free patch repair kit for any accidents that may need fixing. I can also let out some waistbands when outgrown. Please contact me directly for these services.
